A new road

Certainly not the most hospitable running weather, but I've run in worse. The rain that was forecast actually came down as snow, but it wasn't constant. The temperature hovered around freezing for most of the run.

Today with my run I made it to my first interim training goal: running 7km non-stop. While only my 4th run this season, I rediscovered that familiar cadence from a couple years ago and felt pretty comfortable most of the way. The final two km splits were faster than the rest too, and I like where that's headed.

To shake things up a bit, I changed up my route to include a northbound loop on Country Lane towards the entrance to the golf course. It's a quiet part of the route that heads into the countryside a bit. Almost no traffic.  I can see that being a nice part of the run to extend further north as I run farther each Sunday and as the warmer part of spring arrives.Sometimes you just have to change things up, and it's good to follow your gut.

More later, but for now I've gotta run.

A clear March night

Today was a mild early spring day. Tonight's long run started just after sunset, with Saturn and Jupiter flanking a crescent moon in the western sky. It's early in the season, and I'm beginning to think about a series of events to help me build my way up to the big run.

I haven't formally committed to the marathon yet, but I've definitely been flirting with it.  I've committed to get a full cardiac workup before signing up for the full 42.2 . While I think I'm in pretty good shape, I want to make sure there isn't anything underlying that would turn me into a statistic. I've been reading that the chances of having a heart attack are about twice as high sitting on the couch compared to running, but there are just too many stories of people going down in the midst of an otherwise good run to the finish.

It is supposed to be cold tomorrow and for a couple days...so I'll have to pull out the running jacket.

More later, but for now I've gotta run.

Getting a move on

Well, it's been some time since my last post. I did run the Scotiabank 5km run on essentially no base of training whatsoever. I attended with a bunch of colleagues from York University and monies raised were once again directed to a bursary for students with disabilities. I started the race with Mona ... we had a fun time at the start of the race ... eventually I got ahead of her for a bit...only to find myself completely sucking wind...Mona passed me by and was gone for good. Ah well, such is life...it's all about pacing yourself, eh?! Still, I ended the run in around 33 minutes...which isn't too bad for not having prepared.

Today is March 7th and the temperature was 14 degrees...and so I took myself out. I thought my second cold of the season (I had six weeks of illness in the fall that kept me off my feet) and my ailing knees (some inexplicable knee pain that might have arisen from kneeling too long in the course of home renos) might pose a problem, but some walking and light jogging tonight broke the ice. In the end, it was a nice pre-spring "just get out there for 45 minutes and keep moving" kind of installment to what I hope is an excellent and challenging running season.

Note to self: remember to charge the GPS watch next time before the run so you can keep your stats on Garmin.  Tonight, estimated distance = 5km; time was around 48 minutes.

More later, but for now I've gotta run...

Going to the Scotiabank 5K today

With little training under my (ever enlarging) belt, I'm heading to the Scotiabank 5K today. Results to come!

More later, but for now I've gotta run.

Starting from scratch

Well, if you've been following the blog posts over the month of March, you'll have seen a good beginning to the training season. Having now gone through a small surgery in April, I'm pretty well going to have to start from scratch.

Walking to the kitchen or bathroom has felt, for the past few days at least, like the last km of last year's half marathon...tired, a bit dizzy, stiff, and winded. Then I made it to the mailbox, then the corner, then the next corner. And, as every microcosm is true to the macro, I overdid it yesterday by walking too far, and perhaps too fast, and I was sidelined last night, planning moves from the sofa carefully, so as to make the absolute most of the logistics of hydration and bathroom stops.

Today is a little better, but while my mind's eye can see covering 3 sequential legs of 7 km each in 42 mins each, the body begs to differ. I suspect it will argue for a time and so I'm starting from scratch, building the arguments my body will be persuaded by so that in perhaps a few weeks time I'll again be talking in terms of distances and time.

More later, but for now I've gotta ... amble.
